Government of BC’s Building Act - An Overview
In this post, we'll break down the key points of the BC Building Act from this article on the Government of BC's site.
Intended to modernize pieces of outdated legislation regarding building regulatory systems, the Act poses a series of revisions.
First, the Act makes the Province the only authority to set technical requirements such as demolition and repair. This is an effort to streamline processes where developers would have to consider Federal and Municipal laws for projects based in BC.
Next, the act establishes updated competency standards for developers to gain approval.
Through a new provincial review process for innovative building proposals, developers thinking outside the box can access new incentives.
The Act applies to all parts of the province "except the City of Vancouver and federal lands and reserves."
